DEM Solutions, a market leader in DEM (discrete element modelling) software and services for the design and optimisation of bulk particle handling and process equipment, has introduced EDEM CFD Coupling Interface, which enables coupling of EDEM with any proprietary, open source or in-house multi-phase CFD solver to simulate fully coupled particle-fluid flow at the particle-scale.
DEM Solutions pioneered industry application of coupled DE-CFD simulation with the introduction in 2006 of coupled EDEM-Fluent simulation employing a dedicated bi-directional coupling between EDEM and Ansys Fluent software.
This co-simulation capability is now widely used in both industrial and academic R&D to model processes such as fluidised beds, pneumatic and hydrodynamic transport of solids, solid-liquid mixing, and many other particle-fluid systems.
The new CFD Coupling Interface extends this capability to any CFD software with a multi-phase solver. It enables development of coupled DEM-CFD solutions using the fastest and most extensible DEM simulation software on the market.
The CFD Coupling Interface can access the custom particle property functions via the EDEM API providing a means of simulating any particle-fluid interaction including momentum, heat and mass transfer.
'The EDEM CFD Coupling Interface is a significant addition to the EDEM simulation platform,' comments Dr John Favier, CEO of DEM Solutions. 'In addition to enabling customised solutions for coupled particle-fluid flow simulation, the new interface provides our customers with the capability to couple EDEM with solvers simulating electromagnetic fields.'
